so i'm in bolivia! i absolutely love hospital del nino and yesterday i learned how to conduct physical examinations of the heart, lungs, and mouth. essentially i get to perform the check-up on the children and then the head doctors re-checks to assure that i didn't miss anything or fail to hear a soplo (heart murmur). my spanish is increasing exponentially, it's all coming back to me, kind of like riding a bike. i presented the case history of a 6 year old boy yesterday who had been admitted to hospital del nino for failing to comply with his HIV treatment course. it is obvious that the family is extremely poor and my heart just broke for him. he was so cute and kept trying to give me his cookies.
in addition, yesterday mel and i went to valle de la luna which was this awesome badlands area with amazing crevaces and gullies and valleys made from volcanic rock and erosion. it took us about an hour to hike the path (still adjusting to the altitude) but it was absolutely worth it. the land is so beautiful i can't even describe it and pictures definitely don't do the mountains justice.
on an unfortunate note i am moving homestays. pending police report (gah) means i can't say much but hopefully i will get to be with a nice family!
next week i start rotations at hospital arco-iris (rainbow in spanish). it's further outside of la paz than del nino y tenemos que buscar otro mini and we have no idea what the number is!
